We are a seasoned retained executive search professional and a lawyer – together today, we’re Hunter (get it?) and Esquire. We’re partners in life and in business, and we found ourselves looking for a new challenge around the same time. We heard over and over from friends in the cannabis industry that there was a need for executive search resources, and nobody that really fit the bill. Our backgrounds have prepared us extremely well to successfully assist our cannabis clients’ efforts to elevate their brands in the executive-level candidate marketplace, and ultimately to win and retain best-in-class executives to ensure their businesses can succeed at reaching new heights.

I’m a father, a husband, a trailblazer and CEO of H+E. My professional background prior to launching H+E was entirely in retained executive search for 18 years in MedTech/Pharma (15 yrs) and Food and Adult Beverage CPG (3 yrs). My deep knowledge of those highly regulated and nuanced industries has helped H+E greatly understand the needs and wants of our cannabis clients. My deep and genuine networks within those industries has helped us deliver that rare talent “unicorn” our clients desire to fit their very specific needs. My client-first approach helps us deliver a very customized, white glove, headhunter treatment to client and candidate.

Jessica Passman

I’m a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur, and COO and General Counsel of H+E. My professional background as an attorney allows H+E to provide a higher level of excellence to our clients through meticulous processes and problem solving. My entrepreneurial experience, developed when I was COO & GC for a startup, allows H+E to understand many of our clients’ challenges firsthand, such as wearing many hats and having too much on your plate. Lastly, a large part of my role as COO & GC of a startup was recruiting nationally and internationally which I found I not only enjoyed, but excelled at. That experience over the course of seven years allows me (and H+E) to have a deep understanding of each part of the recruitment process.

The Industry

Our industry encompasses companies and organizations worldwide that operate in the cannabis industry. This includes medical and adult-use marijuana, CBD, and hemp products. Another way to segment the industry is by business type, i.e. plant touching, direct support and ancillary.

Since many executive positions in the cannabis industry are newly-created roles, many companies struggle to find top talent because they lack a previous reference point.

It can also be difficult to creatively design a desirable compensation package and candidate experience which attracts best-in-class talent from a more established industry.

Of course, culture fit is also extremely important, and in this industry where almost every company is in the start-up phase, the company culture is often still being defined.
